Inserted pictures not visible

All of a sudden, all of my word documents no longer show the pictures that

have been inserted. A blank frame is displayed but no matter what I have

tried, I cannot get the pictures to display. This includes display of Word

Art text.

      In the Tools > Options > View dialog, check the Drawings box and

      uncheck the Picture Placeholders box.
